Welcome to the
Shawnee
Squirrel Hunt
Website

Each year since 2002, several squirrel hunters have attended the annual Shawnee Squirrel Hunt in Southern Illinois. For more than 20 years, people from all over the US and even some as far away as New Zealand and Great Britian, have been attending and enjoying the great outdoors of the Shawnee National Forest. Some come to hunt, others to share the experience, whether it's camping, hiking, or just seeing old friends.  We would like to extend a welcome to hunters new and old, novice or experienced to attend the annual hunt and we look forward to seeing you.

About the Shawnee Squirrel Hunt

The Annual Shawnee Squirrel Hunt takes place in the Shawnee National Forest of Southern Illinois each September, as a rule of thumb the hunt begins the next to the last Saturday of September. People attending the annual hunt gather and camp at Pine Hills Campground on Pine Hills Rd, just off of the State Forest Rd near Wolf Lake, IL. Although several folks may arrive days early and leave days after, the official hunt lasts 5 days.

Saturday night there is a carry in supper under the pavilion, followed by live music. Sunday there is a "Iron Sights Contest", ending at sundown, closing with the announcement of the winner and awarding of prizes, again followed by more live music.

Occasionally, a few folks leave Sunday evening to be able to return to work Monday, others may roll out Monday morning. Several will stay for the entire hunt or longer. For those that do stay, the pace slow down a little, hunting in the mornings and spending more time around camp an campfires socializing.

Shawnee Squirrel Hunt Information

This hunt is to take place Sept. 21st-25th, 2024.

All people who read this notice are invited to attend.

The hunt will take place on the southern tip of Illinois in the Shawnee national forest.

This is PRIMARILY a rimfire hunt. If you need to bring a shotgun to hunt with, we won't taunt you.....too much. Lol.

Most of us plan to camp, the chosen campground is "Pine Hills Campground" and is located not far from the town of Wolf Lake. Directions to the campground and maps are listed below in the "Directions and Area Maps" section.

Camping fees are $10.00 per night, be forewarned...there is NO ELECTRICITY, HOOK UPS OF ANY KIND OR DRINKING WATER! There are, vault toilets, fire pits, picnic tables and lantern hooks.

You will not get cell phone reception from the campground! Thank God! You will have to drive a couple miles for that.

Illinois sells a 5 day non-resident license for $35.50. A habitat stamp is also required and will cost you and extra $5.50, these can be bought on-line and I highly suggest you do so.

If you go to Illinois DNR site you will find on-line license here:
Hunting Licenses (all Categories) - Licenses, Permits and Registrations (illinois.gov)

More information can be found here: Welcome to Illinois DNR - Illinois DNR
You can put the dates of the hunt on the permit and it will become activated at that time. The limit on squirrels is 5/day 10 IN POSSESSION, we aim to eat a bunch as we go along!

NOTE! If you were born after Jan 1, 1980, you will need either a hunter safety certificate or an old hunting license issued from your own state.

ALL GUNS MUST BE CASED WHEN INSIDE A VEHICLE! PISTOL HOLSTERS DO NOT COUNT AS a CASE. IT MUST BE ZIPPERED, TIED OR IN A HARD CASE. You may carry a pistol while hunting.
NOBODY FROM OUT OF STATE NEEDS A F.O.I.D. CARD and can buy ammo without it. If you're a resident of Illinois you can't... go figure.
